Instruments for measuring atmospheric pressure

Pressure gauges, pressure measuring instruments are used wherever pneumatics are used, i.e. in practice in all branches of industry. In order for these instruments to function under various conditions, many types have been developed.

Taking into account the reference pressure and the indicated pressure, we can divide them into:

  • absolute pressure gauges - which indicate pressure in relation to vacuum
  • relative pressure gauges - show the pressure in relation to the environment and greater than it
  • vacuum gauges - show relative pressure, lower than the ambient pressure
  • pressure gauge - indicate relative pressure greater and less than the ambient pressure
  • differential manometers - showing the pressure difference

Bourdon tube pressure gauges

A large group of instruments used in the measurement technique are manometers with elastic elements, e.g. diaphragm, Bourdon tube, can. Bourdon tube pressure gauges are currently the most used and therefore dominate our offer. They were made in accordance with the EN 837-1 standard. The name comes from the constructor Eugene Bourdon Wikipedia Eugène Bourdon , and the principle of operation is simple.

One end of said tube is attached to the housing - this way pressure is applied, and the other closed end is connected to a pressure indicating system. This device is used in water supply, pneumatics, heating installations, i.e. in professional language, with non-aggressive media, where the temperature does not exceed 60 ° C.

If the device is to be used in polluted, very dense media, a Bourdon tube with chemical separators should be used.

Pressure gauges

In the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, plastics industries and for installations with temperatures between 60 ° C-200 ° C, a pressure gauge with a stainless steel housing should be used. In places where there is very high pressure and the device will be exposed to mechanical damage, it may be, for example, in a potentially explosive atmosphere, use a manometer with a modified construction.

For gas tightness in laboratories or in a building, reference instruments for measuring atmospheric pressure will be required. On the other hand, contact manometers, which signal the exceeding of the pressure value, make it possible to send information over a long distance by means of electrical output signals.

We use pressure gauges in installations where there are vibrations, shocks or rapid changes in pressure, such as pumps and motor vehicles. The filling can be made of all stainless steel glycerin for aggressive media or with measuring parts made of copper alloys for media that do not react with copper and its alloys.

The pressure gauge with silicone filling, which is entirely made of stainless steel, is used in installations where the temperature exceeds 100 ° C. Capsule pressure gauges are used in the measurement of gaseous media, e.g. metallurgy, gas industry, power industry. This equipment allows you to perform pressure measurements of a very low value.

The described pressure measuring instruments are analog devices that indicate the measurement result on the dial, however, digital devices are also available on the market, which gives the possibility of changing the measuring unit, e.g. bar, mbar or kPa in relation to the current application. Digital pressure gauges are especially useful for checking safety valves. Measurement results can be recorded, which can be a very helpful option in this type of devices.

Pressure measuring instruments - information

When describing the types of pressure gauges and their application, you should also pay attention to the pressure sensors that we also have in our offer. They are universal, available in many variants, e.g. miniature, precise, with variable contacts or with a bayonet connection.

There are also vacuum sensors that are used to measure the technical vacuum, the temperature at which they operate is 0 ° C to + 80 ° C.

In manometers and other measuring devices, brass reducers are also used, which are used to change the connection thread. They are parts resistant to corrosion and temperature changes, they are used to mount pressure gauges in the saddle clamp.

The principle of operation of the pressure gauge

The tube has an oval cross-section and the pressure that presses on its interior through the inlet on the stub pipe causes it to deflect. The stress has a direct influence on the deflection of the tube in relation to the pointer which shows the pressure value on the dial. These types of pressure gauges are used to measure gases, liquids or vacuums (vacuum gauges or manovacometers)
